Take a step back in time at Stevenage Museum this winter, with a dinosaur-themed event and exhibition.

Extinction! Is a touring exhibition from Peterborough Museum and runs until 8 March 2025. Extinction affects us all and one in ten of our wildlife in the UK is critically endangered. Scientists have identified five periods of mass extinction over the geological record and the question is now being asked: are we in a sixth? This exhibition addresses this fascinating topic and journeys through the demise of the dinosaurs and marine reptiles, death of the ice age mammoths and the impact of humans on the dodo.

Through a mix of information panels, replica objects and interactives, the exhibition asks the questions; what is extinction? What causes extinction, and what can we do about it? Topics covered include climate change, biodiversity and wildlife law. The exhibition aims to increase awareness of extinction themes and what individuals can do to make a difference.

A family-friendly dinosaur event is being held on Saturday 9 November. Pete Tabois, from the Travelling Natural History Museum, will be showcasing some fabulous fossils that attendees can handle. There will also be dino-themed games and activities. Sessions at 11am, 12noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. The cost is £7.50 per person or £25 for a group ticket. Concessions are available.

Councillor Loraine Rossati, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Wellbeing for Stevenage Borough Council said:

"This exhibition is going to be a 'pterrific' experience! It's packed with fun and interactive experiences for all the family. Who doesn't love dinosaurs?!

“There's a more serious lesson too, about climate change and the threat to our wildlife. Our planet has experienced several mass extinction events already. Every day, dozens of wildlife species become extinct. Learning about how and why it happens can help to prevent it."
