A Roman celebration is coming to Event Island, as part of this year’s Festival of Archaeology.

Running from 11am-3pm on Saturday 20 July, the event includes demonstrations from the Roman Military Research Society that show why the Roman army was such a formidable force. The Longthorpe Legion will also be there to recreate how everyday people lived in this far-flung, northern outpost of the Roman Empire, Britannia.

Visitors will have the chance to talk to the re-enactors and, if you are brave enough, perhaps join up and get put through your paces as a Roman army recruit!

Stevenage Museum is inviting people to have a go at digging activities to help understand how we find out about the ancient past and piece together the clues found buried beneath our feet.

Junction 7 Creatives is hosting some archaeology-inspired arts and crafts activities.

Councillor Loraine Rossati, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Wellbeing, said:

“What have the Romans ever done for us? Come and find out at Event Island for a fun (and free) family day out. See if you have what it takes to join the Roman army!”

The event is free to attend, and booking isn’t required.
