All taxi drivers and vehicles licensed by Stevenage Borough Council are checked regularly to ensure they are safe and meet legal standards.

This includes criminal record checks and medical checks for drivers, as well as vehicle tests to ensure roadworthiness.

Why choose Stevenage licensed taxis?

Stevenage Borough Council only oversees taxis and drivers licensed within the area. While taxis from outside Stevenage are not illegal, they are not checked or regulated by us. This means their drivers and vehicles might not meet the same safety and safeguarding standards. To stay safe, we strongly encourage you to use Stevenage licensed taxis.

Councillor Simon Speller, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Performance said: “We want everyone to enjoy their Christmas festivities and get home safely to their loved ones. In Stevenage, we have 286 licensed taxi drivers registered with the council, all of whom undergo enhanced safety checks to ensure your journey is safe and reliable. By choosing a Stevenage-licensed taxi, you’re not only prioritising your safety but also supporting local drivers and businesses. This holiday season, make them your first port of call for a cab, relax knowing you’re in safe hands, and have a wonderful Christmas.”

How to spot a Stevenage licensed taxi

  • Drivers: All drivers licensed by the council have passed enhanced background checks. They wear a visible badge showing their photo, name, badge number, and expiry date.
  • Vehicles: Licensed taxis display clear signs:
    • Private Hire Vehicles (Minicabs): Green plates at the rear and green door signs with the Stevenage Borough Council logo. These must be pre-booked and cannot be hailed on the street or at taxi ranks.
  • Hackney Carriages (Taxis): These vehicles display yellow plates at the rear and an illuminated taxi sign on the roof. They can be hailed on the street or found at taxi ranks.

Avoid dodgy cabs and touts

Be cautious of unlicensed taxis or touts who approach you at night, especially near clubs or tourist spots. These cars might not be insured or safe, and they often charge inflated fares.

Tips to get home safely:

  • Only use licensed taxis or minicabs.
  • Book your taxi online, by phone, or through a minicab office.
  • Avoid getting into a car with someone who approaches you on the street.
  • When booking, ask for the driver’s name for extra peace of mind.

Most importantly, stay safe, enjoy your Christmas festivities, and make sure your journey is in a trusted, licensed Stevenage taxi.
