Reinvigorating our urban areas through art and our natural green assets
The council has recently undertaken an artwork project to reinvigorate and revitalise the Glebe Neighbourhood Centre, enhancing the centre’s vibrancy, to attract additional sustainable investment and bring additional footfall to the centre.
The initiative has transformed existing infrastructure to reflect the town’s abundance of green spaces and showcase Stevenage’s natural beauty and commitment to supporting economic growth. The mural reflecting British countryside in springtime aims to foster a renewed sense of pride amongst residents, create new opportunities to support local businesses at the centre, while also positioning the area, and Stevenage, for wider investment and tourism opportunities.
Councillor Lloyd Briscoe, Cabinet Member for Economy, Skills and Transport said: “I’m delighted to see this new artwork join the many creative pieces across Stevenage, enhancing the town’s identity and supporting our wider placemaking vision. This initiative strengthens the economic vibrancy of Stevenage by increasing business visibility, encouraging residents to shop local and attracting more visitors and footfall into our commercial centres.
“Supporting sustainable businesses and encouraging growth within our local economy is essential for both The Glebe and our town. This project reflects our commitment to making Stevenage a thriving, forward-thinking town where creativity and business go hand in hand. Attracting new businesses is key to driving investment, creating jobs, alongside supporting existing businesses with supply chain opportunities and ensuring a prosperous future for Stevenage and our local community."

Councillor Loraine Rossati, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Wellbeing said: “Art helps to create a vibrant atmosphere for people to relax in and enjoy. Investing in the look and feel of an area also develops a sense of pride and belonging, connecting us to our town. Along with our underpasses, media cabinets, sculptures and the Arts & Heritage Trail that will launch in the summer, the council aims to improve people's wellbeing through art. Integrating art into our neighbourhoods contributes to creating a place where people want to live, visit, and shop - supporting local businesses and ensuring a thriving, vibrant community.”
The artwork project initiative is part of an ongoing council-wide business support programme to revitalise neighbourhood centres and high streets to build business resilience and support the wider economy. For further information on support for business please email our Economic Development Team.
