The Mayor, Cllr Jim Brown, officially opened the display of books connected with the Holocaust at Stevenage Central Library on Tuesday 14 January. The books on display are updated each year and this year’s selection included books suitable for children. The display will be in place until the end of the month.

Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked with an event on Monday 27 January.

With support from Stevenage Liberal Synagogue, Stevenage Borough Council will hold the annual event on Monday 27 January in the Council Chamber at Daneshill House.

This Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of

Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

The theme for this year is For a Better Future, which will provide an opportunity for people to come together, learn both from and about the past, and take actions to make a better future for all.

Mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Jim Brown said:

“We take great pride in supporting Holocaust Memorial Day each year, offering our community a meaningful opportunity to honour the memory of those who were tragically murdered during the Holocaust under Nazi persecution.

“It is also a vital moment to reflect on the atrocities of subsequent genocides that have occurred across the globe.”

Although the event is fully booked, residents can also get involved in the national moment at 8pm on 27 January, where people across the nation will light candles and put them safely in their windows to remember those who were murdered for who they were and stand against prejudice and hatred today.
