Support for Care Leavers

We work with our partners at Hertfordshire County Council as part of the Hertfordshire Joint Housing Protocol and within our Housing Allocation Scheme to enable those leaving care to access social housing.

Stevenage Borough Council will receive a referral from the ‘Leaving Care service’ at Hertfordshire County Council when a young person is preparing to leave Childrens Services to live independently. Our Specialist Support Officers will complete a Care Leavers Assessment to ensure the applicant is ready to ‘move on’, manage their own tenancy and has the correct support in place. The assessment is usually carried out with young person and their personal advisor.

The Specialist Support Officer will support the young person throughout their introductory tenancy (one year) alongside the personal advisor to help them to maintain their tenancy and successfully move onto their secure tenancy. If ongoing support is required the Specialist Support Officer will continue to support them on our Tenancy Sustainment service.
