We are responsible for carrying out routine inspections of commercial premises to ensure health and safety practices at work.

Our Environmental Health division is responsible for enforcing the Health and Safety at Work Act in offices, shops, warehouses, catering premises, residential accommodation, leisure and consumer services, to protect the safety and welfare of employers and the public.

The Health and Safety Executive ensures that risks to people's health and safety from work activities are properly controlled in areas such as industrial premises, transport, factories and construction sites.

Investigation

We are responsible for dealing with problems relating to work related accidents.

Health and Safety enforcement responsibilities are split between the Health and Safety Executive and local authorities.

We will carry out:

  • inspections of business premises such as offices, shops and warehouses and catering premises to ensure conditions are satisfactory and safe;
  • an investigation of an accident at work which involves either staff or the public; and
  • an investigation into a complaint relating to health and safety.

We will provide information to businesses and members of the public to increase general awareness of health and safety.

Council buildings, manufacturing and construction industries are dealt with by the Health and Safety Executive.

Regulation and inspection

We carry out regular checks on local businesses and business premises to ensure that safe and healthy working conditions are provided for all employees and visitors.
