Calling all young superheroes – Join our summer competition
We’re excited to launch a fun and creative summer competition – and we want all children in Stevenage to get involved!
Stevenage Borough Council is inviting all school-aged children living in Stevenage to design their very own eco-superhero – a character who will help us reduce, reuse, and recycle waste in our town.
Let’s inspire the next generation of eco-heroes together!
Your mission
Create a bold and colourful superhero character whose unique powers help save the planet by stopping recyclable materials and food waste from ending up in landfill. Your superhero could focus on:
- Saving food waste – making sure it goes into the food caddy, not the general bin.
- Rescuing recyclables – encouraging people to recycle properly and with purpose!
Your superhero will need:
- A catchy name that reflects their special recycling powers.
- A description of their powers and personality.
- An explanation of how they help protect the planet.
The prize
Later this year, Stevenage Borough Council will welcome four brand-new waste collection vehicles, ready for the launch of our new food waste collection service in spring 2026.
The winning superhero design from each age category will be professionally digitalised by our graphic design team and printed on one of the new vehicles! Even more exciting — each vehicle will be named after the winning superhero.
You’ll get to see your superhero come to life as a striking digital graphic, helping inspire the whole town to recycle better!
Design tips
- Be bright, bold, and eye-catching
- Create a superhero name that links cleverly to their recycling powers.
- Include a short description of your hero’s abilities — for example: “Captain Compost uses laser vision to spot food waste and zap it into the food caddy!”
- Your superhero could be made from waste or recycling products like Barry the Banana.

- Competition runs: 27 June – 18 August
- Winners announced: Week beginning 1 September

- Ages 4–8
- Ages 9–11
- Ages 12–14
- Ages 15–18
Judging panel
Your entries will be reviewed by a panel including:
- The Mayor of Stevenage
- A local councillor
- Officers of Stevenage Borough Council
Meet your Hero in Action!
Winners will be invited to meet the new vehicles once they arrive and will see their superhero design in action as it travels across Stevenage collecting food waste in Spring 2026!

Send your entry to the Waste Household Team
Please make sure your email includes:
- Your superhero’s name
- The designer’s name and age
- A parent/guardian’s name and contact details
