Stevenage is getting into the Olympic spirit

Stevenage celebrates the Olympic flag handover to London for the 2012 Olympic Games.
This Sunday , 24 August, Stevenage will be celebrating the handover of the Olympic flag to London for the 2012 Olympic Games. The Olympic flag will be raised at Daneshill House at 2:30 pm. This is the approximate time that the flag will be handed over to London from Beijing.
The flag will be raised by the Mayor of Stevenage, Cllr Michael Patston and by Sporting Champion Lesley Owusu. Lesley is a young 400 metre runner who has recently been competing in the US university athletics leagues.
Lesley will also run the first leg of a relay involving local sports clubs which will take the flag from one of Stevenage’s Pre Games Training Camps, Ridlins Athletics Track, across town to Daneshill House for the ceremony. The sports clubs taking part in the relay are Fairlands Valley Spartans, Stevenage Boxing Club, Stevenage Rugby Club, Stevenage North Herts Athletics Club and Stevenage Cricket Club. The Cyclists Touring Club will be doing a general ride around Stevenage prior to the relay.
Additional activities will be taking place in Stevenage on the 24th to mark the event:
- Free swim for children under the age of 16 from 1pm – 3pm at the Stevenage Swimming Centre. This will be subject to bather restrictions and children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Free fitness induction at TLC (Stevenage Art and Leisure Centre) from 12noon – 4 pm.
- A Dodgeball competition for local pubs at the Arts & Leisure Centre in the main hall from 3.00pm – 5.30pm.
- For the young mums there will be classes in yoga, pilates and overall body conditioning designed for young mums aged 16-24. Babies can be brought to the sessions which will be held in the spinning room at the leisure centre on a first come first served basis. All classes are free to join in.
