As part of the Big Draw campaign, Stevenage Museum is inviting all Stevenage Schools to help beat a world record and create the World’s longest cartoon strip.

Cartoonist Mike Barfield has created our very own character ‘Steve. I Wonder’ – the curious kid with the question mark quiff, especially for the project.  Steve, named in honour of Stevenage, is a curious looking kid with a curious mind. True to his name, Steve likes to wonder about everything and lives in a world where anything can happen.

Children of all ages are invited to take the character and create their own adventure for Steve, drawing them in a cartoon form complete with speech bubbles.

Stevie Doherty, the Museum Education Officer, will be visiting local school assemblies to talk about the project. Every child will be given an A3 cartoon box and a caption to illustrate, along with some simple guidelines to help them draw a great cartoon and already over 800 children will be taking part.

Schools will hand in their entries by 18 October to help go for the record on Saturday 21 October between 12noon and 4pm, when members of the public will be invited to come along to the museum dressed as their favourite cartoon character, read the story so far and add their part of the story. There will be prizes for the best costume and Beano giveaways as well as certificates produced by the Beano for the best artwork in 3 categories: Under 7s, 8-12s and over 12s.

The Museum would like to thank The Beano for supporting the event and allowing Dennis the Menace and Gnasher to make an appearance in the cartoon and local cartoonist Mike Barfield for giving us the idea.
