Opening of the newly refurbished New Town Galleries at Stevenage Museum
Saturday 18 November at 12 noon
Come along and join us for the grand opening of our new permanent displays telling the story of Stevenage from 1946 to the present day.
The redisplay, is a part of the huge celebrations taking part all over Stevenage to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the first ever post war new town and has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The museum team have been working together over the past nine weeks on the project and are delighted with the end result.
The Galleries will be opened by the Mayor of Stevenage at 12 noon.
There will be live music, prize quizzes and free bus tours of the New Town.
Some of the new gallery features include:
- A 1950’s kitchen that you can walk into and explore. Children can put on a pinny and lay the table for dinner.
- A record sound booth where you can listen to sounds from each of the decades.
- A touch screen database of people’s memories of the New Town, from rent protests to shopping, going out at the Locarno to working in a canteen.
If that’s not enough, why not take a ride on a bike and follow a video cycle route around Stevenage.
For our younger visitors, you can join our time traveller Sam as he makes his way from attending a football match at Stevenage Borough in the 1990’s to meeting a Roman Centurion.
A private view will take place on Friday 17th November at 6.30pm for invited guests. Press are invited to take photographs at that time.
