Litter Bins

Litter in a public place is unsightly, unsafe and unpleasant, dangerous to animals and pedestrians, and an offence.

The average fine for littering is around £95, but can be up to £2,500. The Council provides and maintains bins to try and prevent the depositing of litter in public places and arrange for the bins to be emptied on a regular basis.

Litter ranges in size from a single sweet wrapper, to a bag full of rubbish. The Environmental Protection Act of 1990 states that if a person drops, throws, deposits, or leaves anything that causes defacement in a public place, they are committing a littering offence. So always try to use a litter bin or take it home.

There are over 500 litter bins in Stevenage. Each bin is emptied at least once each week and can take bagged dog waste and litter. To report a problem with a litter bin or to request a litter bin at a new location, please contact us using one of the following methods:
