Why not take a walk in your local woodland and discover some of the hidden gems of Stevenage?
During the recent heat wave, we were being told to keep safe and not expose ourselves to too much sun. But we still wanted to get out and enjoy the fresh air and, if we were lucky, find a welcome breeze to cool us down.
Stevenage has some lovely woodland areas to take a walk in any time of the year, come rain or shine.
There are over 40 woodland areas in Stevenage, so there will be one not too far away from where you live. Here are some of them:
- Ash Tree Wood
- Roebuck wood
- Fairlands Valley
- Whomerley Wood
- Monks Wood
- Ridlins Wood/Loves Wood
- Lanterns wood
Did you know…?
Stevenage has 220 acres of beautiful woodland, most of which are “semi-natural ancient woodland sites.” This is land that has been woodland since at least 1600AD.
Our town has about 40,000 trees in parks and along streets. If these were all planted together they would make up a forest covering approximately 400 acres!
How you can help to look after Stevenage’s woodlands
Because Stevenage has so many trees we need your help to look after them. The Tree Warden Scheme is a nation-wide volunteer scheme, run by the Tree Council. You don’t need to be a tree expert, just enthusiastic and observant. Tree Wardens work with Stevenage Borough Council and the local community to protect trees and woods.
If you would like to find out more, or for information about becoming a Tree Warden, contact Nahida Burden at Stevenage Borough Council on 01438 242676.
