Have your say on the future of waste

Hertfordshire councils need your help to make some important decisions about how to manage the county’s waste in future.

These decisions will affect everyone so until the end of March, you have a chance to have your say.

Hertfordshire homes send about 300,000 tonnes of waste to landfill sites each year but this can’t continue.  Most of the county’s landfill contracts run out in 2009 and there aren’t any more suitable landfill sites.

Landfill is also harmful to the environment.  Buried rubbish can pollute the environment and contribute to global warming.

Because of this damage stricter environmental controls have been introduced to landfill sites resulting in increased costs.  Local authorities have been set limits for the amount of waste they can send to landfill and will face substantial fines if they go above these limits.  Without some big changes, Hertfordshire’s council taxpayers will be facing millions of pounds in extra costs.

Hertfordshire councils have put together a strategy and they want to know what you think about it.
