Eco Schools
The Eco schools programme is an International education scheme that encourages pupils to be aware of, and make positive changes to their school environment.
The programme involves seven steps that schools can adopt;
- eco-school committee
- Environmental Review
- Action Plan
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Curriculum work
- Informaing and involving
- Eco-code
The programme can help schools to:
- Improve their environment
- Reduce litter and waste
- Reduce energy and water bills
- Think of efficient ways of travelling to and from school
- Promote healthy lifestyles
The scheme is run in conjunction with Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and the national curriculum and incorporates geography, maths history and biology.
There are three levels of awards;
- Bronze
- Silver
- Green Flag
Bronze and silver are self-assessment, made online through the eco schools website and lead to a certificate.
Green Flag is assessed externally by Encams. They look for evidence that the school is running sustainable initiatives in all the e areas in the criteria, this leads to a certificate and flag.
In Stevenage, we have 28 schools signed up to the scheme from infant and junior through to senior schools. 10 have achieved bronze and 9 have achieved silver awards and the others are working towards achieving their bronze.
We have 3 schools with flags and many others being awarded their silver status.
