Code of Conduct for Elected Members

The Code of Conduct for Elected Members is a set of standards that all Councillors and any co-opted or appointed person who sit on Council committees must agree to follow.

It covers areas of individual behaviour like not abusing their position or misusing authority resources.  There are also rules outlining disclosure of interest and withdrawal from meetings where they have an interest. Members are also required to record their financial and other interests on the public register.

Complaints process

Changes to the complaints procedure

The responsibility for considering complaints that a member may have breached the Code of Conduct has now moved to the standards committees of local authorities.

What this means to you

If you want to complain about the conduct of a member of Stevenage Borough Council you must submit your complaint to:

Chair of the assessment sub-committee
c/o The Borough Solicitor
Stevenage Borough Council
Daneshill House
Danestrete
Stevenage
Herts SG1 1HN

The assessment sub-committee can only deal with complaints about the behaviour of a member. It will not deal with complaints about things that are not covered by the members’ Code of Conduct. If you make a complaint to the assessment sub-committee it must be about why you think a member has not followed the Code of Conduct.
