The Commercial Team of Environmental Health operates the Council's air quality monitoring station which monitors for fine particles and nitrogen dioxide. A monitoring programme for nitrogen dioxide is also carried out at 17 sites across the borough.

Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, any person who permits a dog that is in their charge to foul any area to which the public has access is committing an offence.

Licence - zoo
Under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981 any establishment where wild animals are kept for exhibition to the public otherwise than for the purposes of a circus or a pet shop requires a licence from the local authority.

Licence - dangerous wild animals
The Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 states that licences are required from the local authority to keep certain animals. An application must be made to the local authority who will inspect the premises where the animal is to be kept with a vet to ensure that the conditions, cages, food, etc. are suitable. The Council can take action against the owner of a dog which acts dangerously or aggressively if in such a way as to put a person in fear for their safety. It does not actually have to have bitten anyone for action to be taken.
